is the name of my new painting that I am working on.
This painting is a tribute to Herman Wallace and the 42 grueling years that he spent locked up alone. Herman Wallace was sent to solitary confinement for the murder of a 23 year old prison guard some 42 years ago. He was a member of the ‘Black Panther’ party and was serving out a 50 year armed robbery sentence when the murder occurred.
U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson in Baton Rouge had ordered Wallace released from prison after granting him a new trial. Jackson ruled women were unconstitutionally excluded from the grand jury that indicted Wallace in the stabbing death of the 23-year-old guard, Brent Miller. Herman Wallace died 3 days after his release to liver cancer.
We all do some horrific things in our life that if given the opportunity we would do over. Maybe our regrets aren’t as severe as Herman’s were. However, could you spend 23 hours a day locked up inside a 6×6 cell cut off from any other human life? How about living out that routine for 42 years ?
I sure as hell couldn’t…
